Blocking Kosovo Independence

Wednesday, February 13th, 2008

The head of Russia’s international affairs committee said the blocking of Kosovo’s admission as an independent state is a political stance.

The developing relations of Russia with other self proclaimed republics may be affected by the declaration of independence. The Council of Europe was also being dissuaded from supporting Kosovo’s move which is seen as inappropriate. With the re-election of pro-European president Boris Tadic, it is seen as a signal for the imminent declaration of independence by Kosovo.

North Korean officials also tentatively agreed to release thousands of document pages to U.S. officials dating back to 1990, and concerning the daily production records of the facility. These records are intended to verify the claims of North Korea in terms of determining how much plutonium was produced at the facility. They have indicated that it produced more than 30 kilograms of plutonium, not counting the material or waste that collects in the pipes of the facility.

North Korea belongs to one of the five countries on the U.S. list of state sponsors of terrorism, which makes it subject to U.S. export controls, particularly the dual-use of military and technology equipment.
