Friday, March 20th, 2009

North Korea fires medium and long range missiles as it clamors to establish itself as a nuclear power, once again smashing the peace in that region of the world. The North has long been plagued by isolation and is known to be one of the few countries that shun relationships with the West and it’s allies in the region. They have been hit with sanctions as part of the UN’s stance against neuclear proliferation, their actions again piling up trade sanctions that is sure to isolate the impoverished populace furhter.

Diplomats said that the destruction of the cooling tower is intended to be broadcast around the globe as a striking visual, as U.S. officials intended. This would offer tangible evidence that North Korea was indeed retreating from its nuclear ambitions. Experts say that the destruction would be symbolic. During the talks, North Korean officials reaffirmed that it would quickly act after Pyongyang is removed from the terrorism list.

North Korean officials also tentatively agreed to release thousands of document pages to U.S. officials dating back to 1990, and concerning the daily production records of the facility. These records are intended to verify the claims of North Korea in terms of determining how much plutonium was produced at the facility. They have indicated that it produced more than 30 kilograms of plutonium, not counting the material or waste that collects in the pipes of the facility.

North Korea belongs to one of the five countries on the U.S. list of state sponsors of terrorism, which makes it subject to U.S. export controls, particularly the dual-use of military and technology equipment.
